Then, in three months’ time, the average working Ohioan will have to start paying income taxes. Despite the upcoming tax bite, this has not stopped the local arts community from stepping up its efforts to produce new and innovative works for the stage. With a robust national economy, The Canton Rep theaters is hosting Canton’s first PlayScene, an evening of plays and musicals, on July 11. It’s part of the theater’s PlayProjects program, which strives to make theater a viable art form for the people of Canton. The all-day event will also feature a variety of arts-related activities. This year, the Rep’s PlayProjects series is expanding. While last year’s inaugural event featured five shows, this year, eight will be performed. “The PlayScene series is a great opportunity for local theater artists to present their work to the community,” says Rose Ewert, the Rep’s Director of Public Programs. “We’re hoping this first year inspires theater people to come together and help our community take the next steps toward becoming a thriving arts community.” The eight plays, which will be performed in the Rep’s Wood Memorial stage, are: Theater Everywhere: Characters from Ohio’s Banned Plays, written by Michael DeVault, directed by Paul Girardin, starring Jim Lahey, Jim Wickline, Jackie Dunn, Ed Matteson, and Brian Miller , written by Michael DeVault, directed by Paul Girardin, starring Jim Lahey, Jim Wickline, Jackie Dunn, Ed Matteson, and Brian Miller The Comedy of Errors, written by William Shakespeare, directed by Brian Miller, starring Scott Johnson, James McGee, Mark Eberle, Brent Moser, Joey Bennett, and Katie Mullens written by William Shakespeare, directed by Brian Miller, starring Scott Johnson, James McGee, Mark Eberle, Brent Moser, Joey Bennett, and Katie Mullens Amadeus, written by Peter Shaffer, directed by Chris Stoner, starring Brent Moser, Amanda Bennett, James McGee, Mark Eberle, Brent Bechtel be359ba680
